Discern Your Gift
Discerning Our Gifts
as Catholics
God has given each of us unique gifts to serve Him and others. Discerning these gifts is
an essential part of living out our faith. Here are three key steps to help you recognize and
develop the gifts God has placed within you:
1. Pray for Guidance
Begin with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal your gifts. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly.” Spend time in silent prayer, reflecting on how God has already worked through you.
2. Reflect on Your Passions and Strengths
God often calls us through the desires and talents He has placed in our hearts. Ask yourself:
What activities bring me joy and fulfillment?
What do others recognize as my strengths?
When do I feel most alive in serving others?
Sometimes, our gifts are not what we expect, but they become evident through experience and the encouragement of others.
3. Serve and Observe the Fruits
Gifts are best discerned in action. Try different forms of service—teaching, music, hospitality, prayer ministry, or acts of charity. Pay attention to where you feel most at peace and where your efforts bear fruit. As Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:16).
Final Encouragement
Discerning your gifts is a journey, not a one-time event. Stay open to God’s call, seek counsel from trusted spiritual mentors, and remember that every gift is meant to glorify God and build up His Church. As St. Paul teaches, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4).
